Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Better Business?

A local business that is an accredited BBP member and who undertake actions to become more sustainable in 9 key areas: Energy, Water, Waste, Transport, Reducing Plastic, Community, Staff, Purchasing and Business Health. They are committed to improving their practices and doing their best to reduce their environmental impact, making social improvements, whilst thriving economically. Better Businesses are all for the planet, people and prosperity – so let’s support them!

Why Choose a Better Business?

It’s important to support all local businesses wherever possible, to ensure a cohesive and economically robust local community. Buying local means less pollution is created as less energy is expended from unnecessary travel. Less energy used for transportation and production generates less pollution and therefore reduces our carbon emissions. Better Businesses are local businesses that go one step further. They want their operations to be successful through sustainability. They demonstrate a commitment to people and planet and show that being in business is not just about the bottom line. Acknowledging that they can be a good corporate citizen through supporting social causes and  improving their operations which leaves a smaller imprint on the environment.

How does a local business become a Better Business?

The first step is for a local business to become a BBP member. To become a member a business needs to reside within the North Sydney, Willoughby or Ku-ring-gai Council areas and then be assessed against nine areas of business sustainability. Once assessed the business becomes an accredited BBP member and they are classified as a Better Business.

It’s not about being perfect, as sustainability is an ongoing journey for all. BBP is for any local business that wants to be successful through sustainable practices and become more environmentally friendly. If you are a local business who is interested in joining, complete the online assessment.

Buy Better Buy Local‘ is a BBP initiative to encourage the community to ‘go local first’ and seek out businesses who are BBP accredited.

Why? Because these local businesses are undertaking actions to be more sustainable in their practices and have a mindful awareness of their impact on people and the environment.
